Question : 11 [SSC Constable 2013]
In an examination 80% of the boys passed in English and 85% passed in Mathematics, while 75% passed in both. If 45 boys failed in both, the number of boys who sat for the examination was
a) 200
b) 450
c) 150
d) 400
Answer »Answer: (b)
Successful boys in English or Maths or both
= 80 + 85 – 75 = 90%
Unsuccessful boys = 10%
Total number of boys = $100/10 × 45$ = 450
Question : 12 [SSC CHSL 2013]
In the annual examination Mahuya got 10% less marks than Supriyo in Mathematics. Mahuya got 81 marks. The marks of Supriyo are
a) 88
b) 87
c) 89

Question : 13
In an examination 34% failed in Mathematics and 42% failed in English. If 20% failed in both the subjects, the percentage of students who passed in both subjects was
a) 44%
b) 50%
c) 56%
d) 54%
Answer »Answer: (a)
Let total number of students = 100
Number of failures in Maths = 34
Number of failures in English = 42
Number of failures in both subjects = 20
Number of failures in Maths or English or both
= 34 + 42 – 20 = 56
Number of students who passed in both subjects
= 100 – 56 = 44
The required percentage = 44%
Using Rule 23,
a = 34%, b = 42%, c = 20%
Passed candidates in both the subjects
= 100 – (a + b – c)
= 100 – (34 + 42 – 20) = 100 – 56 = 44%
Question : 14
In an examination a candidate must secure 40% marks to pass. A candidate, who gets 220 marks, fails by 20 marks. What are the maximum marks for the examination?
a) 600
b) 800
c) 450
d) 1200
Answer »Answer: (a)
According to question,
40% ⇒ 220 + 20 or 40% ⇒ 240
100% ⇒ $240/40 × 100 = 600$
Using Rule 24,
a = 40%, b = 220, c = 20
Total Marks = ${100(220 +20)}/40$
=${100 × 240}/40 = 600$
Question : 15 [SSC MTS 2011]
In an examination, 1100 boys and 900 girls appeared. 50% of the boys and 40% of the girls passed the examination. The percentage of candidates who failed
a) 50%
b) 45.5%
c) 54·5%
d) 45%
Answer »Answer: (c)
Failed candidates = ${1100 × 50}/100 + {900 × 60}/100$
= 550 + 540 = 1090
Required percentage = $1090/2000 × 100 = 54.5%$
Using Rule 25,
B = 1100, b = 50%, G = 900, g = 40%
Percentage of failed candidates = ${(Bb + Gg)}/{B + G}%$
= ${1100 × 50 + 900 × 40}/{1100 + 900}$
= ${55000 + 36000}/2000$
= $91/2$ = 45.5%
